Shade Structure Overview Drawing: For ginseng or other crops:

Shade Structure Notes:
1. Support posts are usually 4" x 4" treated lumber or 6" diameter cedar, redwood, cypress or locust.
2. Posts may be cut to 9 ft., so that 2 ft. is buried and the structure is 7 ft. high. A more economical approach is 8 ft. posts, 22" in the ground and a 6 ft. 2" height. The 6 ft. wide side panels of shade cloth come very close to the ground on the 6 ft. 2" high structures. There is a small gap created when the 7 ft. structures are built, but effective shading is achieved.
3. Wood dead men are approx. 5" diameter x 24", set a minimum of 3 ft. in ground.
4. Cable runs on top of intermediate posts.
5. One method of covering an acre for growing ginseng is (11) panels of 78% lath weave cloth @ 24 ft. x 165 ft. (1 acre = 43,560 sq. ft.). 6 ft. wide, 73% standard cloth typically used on side walls.
Panel Note:
To install panels, overlap the panel edges, lining up the grommet holes so one panel lays on top of the other panel, and the holes line up too. Weave the cable through to effectively provide support for both panels at the joining point.
