UL790 or ASTM E108 Fire Code Requirements:.--.--.--.Back to Fire Test Reports:
-
Occasionally building departments require compliance to these codes. This is rare, but does occur. Due to copyright rules we are not allowed to exactly quote the code book, but here are the basics. When dealing with the building dept., refer to the sections noted.
- Found in the 2006 Edition of the International Building Code
- Section 2610 For Light Transmitting Plastic Skylights: Provided product meets definition of Light Transmitting Plastic Skylight, the aggregate area of a CC1 material can be up to 33 and 1/3 percent of the floor area sheltered by the roof in which the skylight is installed. This doubles to 66 and 2/3 percent if building is "fully sprinkled". See specific paragraph 2610.5.
- Section 2609 for Light Transmitting Plastic Roof Panels. If CC1, can be used to cover up to 30% of the floor area, or 60% if fully sprinkled. Production or research greenhouses with no public access are exempt from this area limitation. See specific paragraph and table 2609.4
Please note that these two sections contain a number of additional limitations, such as buildings designated by specific "Group codes" cannot have Light Transmitting Plastic Roof panels. Also, the definitions are key... for instance a rated roof system (A, B, or C) even though it may be made from a light transmitting plastic, is considered a true "roof system", not a "Light Transmitting Plastic Roof Panel". If you buy a copy of the code, you will find yourself reading many other other sections to be able to fully understand sections 2609 and 2610.
