Our standard self drilling screws for metal frames are carbon steel, with a zinc plating. These screws are fine for steel frames. Aluminum causes a galvanic reaction with steel and corrosion will occur, so our standard screws are not recommended.

The best solution, for corrosion resistance, is #18.8 stainless steel. Problem is #18.8 is very expensive and (in self drilling screws) is a softer metal. Pilot holes may be required and shear strength is not great. Being that both polycarbonate and aluminum experience substantial expansion and contraction screws undergo high shear forces.

#410 stainless steel offers some corrosion resistance, drill well and are strong. By special order we can supply #12 x 1.5" and #12 x 2" - 410 stainless screws with a 3/4" bonded washer. The screw/washer assembly is painted, offering greater protection for the part of the screw that faces the elements. These are available in boxes of 1,000, at a little less than twice the price of the standard screws.

We also can supply unpainted #12 x 1.5" and #12 x 2" - 410 stainless screws and bonded washers. These are sold by the piece and the washer must be assembled by hand. The cost is similar to the price for the assembled and painted #410 stainless, but this is a solution for small jobs.

The online order forms require that you tell us the frame type. Select aluminum and this initiates a phone call from Sundance Supply, so we can discuss your options. Sundance Supply is dedicated to awesome customer service. Your protection is our concern.
